Microbiomes: Life’s invisible helpers

Microbiomes are everywhere: on our skin, in our gut, in soil and in water. Discover how researchers study these hidden communities and learn why they are so important for human health, the environment and life on Earth.

Microbes are everywhere: on our skin, in our gut, on plants, in soil and in water. Together, they form complex communities known as microbiomes, which play an important role in our health, the environment and life on Earth.

But how do scientists explore this invisible world? Thanks to modern methods such as DNA sequencing, we can now study the composition and activity of microbiomes and better understand how they function.

The Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Microbiomes brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines. Together, they investigate the principles that shape microbiomes in very different environments, from an animal’s gut and agricultural soils to the surface of the ocean.

At our booth, you will discover what microbiomes are, what they look like and why life on Earth would hardly be possible without them. Learn about the methods researchers use to study microbiomes and explore applications that could help improve human health and environmental quality. Look forward to hands-on demonstrations, games, short films and fascinating insights into the hidden world of microbes.
